The Independent Investigations Office is being dispatched to Castlegar after person died following an incident with police on Thursday evening.
According to RCMP Cst. Kris Clark, the incident happened after 8 p.m., following a complaint about a possibly impaired driver at a local business. During the course of their patrols, police found the vehicle belonging to the target of the complaint.
While conducting a traffic stop on the vehicle, the RCMP member discharged his service pistol. The driver was transported to hospital, but later died from his injuries.
It happened on Highway 3, and the scene has been secured while crews await the arrival of the IIO. Five investigators, including a forensic specialist, are expected to arrive Friday morning.
