Boy hit by SUV in northeast Calgary

CALGARY – A boy was rushed to hospital on Wednesday after being struck by a vehicle in the community of Huntington Hills.

It happened at the intersection of 4th Street and Huntstrom Drive N.E. around 7:30 a.m.

Police say a northbound Dodge SUV struck the 12-year-old as he crossed the street.

“Early indications are if he wasn’t in the marked crosswalk, he was very close to it.” says Staff Sgt. Paul Stacey.

He was rushed to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in serious condition with concerns of head injuries.

Police believe speed was a factor in the collision.

“It’s a 50 kilometer an hour road, it’s not like the pedestrians are hidden, so we have to determine why the driver didn’t see the pedestrian crossing the road at the time.”

Police spoke to one witness who believes a Good Samaritan driving the opposite direction tried to stop the incident from happening.

“His speculation was that [the Good Samaritan] noticed that this northbound vehicle wasn’t going to stop, so [they] actually swerved into the oncoming lane going right at this vehicle, presumably to get [the driver’s] attention,” explains Stacey.

“But that didn’t work, because the vehicle still struck the boy.”

Charges are pending against the 68-year-old male driver.
