Surrey parents save newborn baby, seconds before car bursts into flames

VANCOUVER – A Surrey family managed to save their three-week-old baby and escape, just before their vehicle burst into flames Thursday night.

The family was coming back from a trip to Walmart at about 8 p.m. when mom, Cynthia Janisse, said she smelled smoke. She didn’t think too much of it at the time, but after travelling down the road a little more, the family realized the smoke was coming from their dashboard. They also saw some sparks.

With their baby in the back, they quickly pulled over and got their son out. Just seconds later the car burst into flames and there were several explosions.

“The smell just kept getting stronger as we approached home,” said father Cole Izsak. “Then we noticed some smoke coming from over where Cynthia was sitting in the car, we had our baby in the back seat and as this smoke increased, we pulled over.”

Janisse said everything happened so fast after they pulled over. “Very fast.”

No one was seriously injured in the incident. The baby slept through the entire incident, even when his mom had to carry him about six blocks in the rain, to get home.
