WATCH: Saskatoon family cleaned out in Kelowna

KELOWNA, B.C. – It wasn’t an entirely happy holiday for a Saskatoon family in Kelowna for Christmas. Their truck, trailer, six snowmobiles and gear were stolen the day before Christmas Eve. With less than a week left before they head back to Saskatchewan, they are still looking for clues and hoping for a holiday miracle.

“I wake up at 4 a.m. and I go through all of the different scenarios but they are really just hypothetical scenarios,” says Grant Ferster. “If we get the whole unit back that would be our best situation.”

Ferster and his wife know the community well as they both lived in Kelowna before moving to Saskatchewan about 15 years ago. The couple and their three teenaged kids had planned on doing six days of snowmobiling.  They got one day in not realizing it would be their last during the two week trip in the Okanagan. They last saw the truck, trailer, six snowmobiles, and all of the gear including helmets and goggles on Monday, December 22. Ferster’s wife, who was up early for a doctor’s appointment the next morning noticed everything was gone.

“We really lost the sport overnight because everything that pertained to our sport, which was a lot, went away with the truck and the trailer,” says Ferster.

He says the truck and trailer are covered by insurance, but he is not so sure about the snow gear. Regardless, he says the family will still take a $50,000 to $60,000 hit.

“The truck and the trailer actually are more important to me than even the sleds themselves because the truck and the trailer were specialized for our family and it outfitted all of our gear.”

He says replacing the whole rig would amount to about $200,000. Despite the loss, the Ferster family is staying positive. They say they are grateful for the outpour of moral support they’ve received from friends, family and members of the snowmobiling community.

“We have received phone calls and messages of support and offers to help from all over Western Canada from friends, family and people in the snowmobiling community who can feel our pain.”

Constable Kris Clark with Kelowna RCMP says there is no update in the search for the missing property but police are continuing the investigation.
