Holiday deliveries vulnerable to thieves: victim

WINNIPEG – Marta Vodrey thought she found the perfect Christmas gifts for her family. Unfortunately she believes someone stole the parcels off of her doorstep after Canada Post delivered them.

“On Friday I checked online and it said successful delivery on Wednesday but we never got it,” said Vodrey.

She says she regularly shops online and has had products delivered on her doorstep frequently but this is the first time something disappeared.

She says she reached out to Canada Post on Twitter but hasn’t heard back. She called the company she bought the gifts from and they are replacing them and sending them out free of charge.

Except this time they won’t be going to her home.

“I’m shipping things to work now that way I can actually get it and hold it.” Vodrey said.

Global News drove around River Heights Monday morning and spotted two parcels left on doorsteps. One of the homes even had a sign instructing Canada Post to leave parcels inside the door. Those instructions were ignored.

It’s not hard in Winnipeg to find parcels left on doorsteps by Canada Post. One woman says the gifts she ordered were stolen after they were left by her door. Tamara Forlanski/Global News

Canada Post sent Global News this response to our inquiry Monday:

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Like any delivery company, we will ‘safe drop’ the item in a safe area so that customers don’t need to travel to a post office. Of course, for Community mailboxes users, more than 80 per cent of our parcels will fit in those secure boxes, so I’m mostly referring to those who have door-to-door delivery.

We only make a safe drop if:

– The item does not require a signature or collection of funds (duties, postage fees etc.).
– A safe place exists that is sheltered from weather and cannot be seen by passers-by (e.g. inside a porch or storm door).
– The sender has not requested “Do not safe drop”.
If we make a safe drop, we’ll leave a notification card to let you know where we left your item.

If a customer does not want a safe drop, they can let their sender know this – so that we can follow the instructions.
