Polar bears back in Sea Ice Passage

WINNIPEG — The Assiniboine Park Zoo reopened the Sea Ice Passage in the Journey to Churchill exhibit today. The zoo’s female bears Kaska and Aurora were enjoying the refilled pools where visitors and media gathered to watch them be returned to the exhibit.

The enclosure had to be closed down and the pools drained after one of the bears chewed through some silicone sealant in September.

The damaged caulking was removed and replaced and to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen again a steel plate was placed over top of the sealant on the outside of the tunnel.

Zoo staff are encouraging people to visit the park because it’s the time of year that polar bears are most active.
