Nova Scotians enjoy warm temperatures ahead of winter cold

HALIFAX – Unseasonably mild temperatures in the Halifax area on Tuesday had joggers and visitors enjoying a last reprieve before the wintry weather.

The high temperature hovered around 15 C all day.

“It’s really humid outside so I just felt it was a bit warm,” said Angela Dini, who had taken off her jacket while strolling along the beach at Point Pleasant Park.

But Nova Scotians shouldn’t get too comfortable — the forecast is calling for rain, ice pellets and possible snow by late Wednesday.

For businesses that rely on cold temperatures, it’s a blessing.

At Ski Martock in Windsor, N.S., the hills are covered in green grass, but snow-making machines are in place ready for the upcoming cold weather.

“We have the ability at full capacity to turn about 10 tonnes of water into snow a minute. So that’s how we capitalize on the cold weather when it happens,” said operations manager Andy MacLean.

The ski hill plans to begin making snow this weekend and open fully to the public by Dec. 13. That’s roughly the same time they opened last year, however, MacLean admits it can be tough for an industry that relies on the weather.

“For us, we’ve been at it for a long time,” he said. “We have some of the best snow makers in the business … and it’s just having confidence that winter, when it does come, it comes.”
