Lava flow filling driveway of Hawaii dump stops

WATCH ABOVE: It’s not just lava threatening families in the town of Puna on Hawaii’s Big Island. The smoke is blowing straight toward people’s homes. Mileka Lincoln reports.

PAHOA, Hawaii – Lava that was filling the driveway of a Hawaii trash transfer station has stopped.

Hawaii County Civil Defence officials say a breakout of the lava flow near the transfer station wasn’t active Friday. It’s no longer burning asphalt.

Officials continue to monitor that breakout, along with two others near the small town of Pahoa.

Civil Defence Director Darryl Oliveira says lava near a cemetery that burned down a house earlier this week hasn’t advanced significantly. Lava is also oozing out at another spot about 275 metres upslope of a rural road.

The county says the breakouts don’t pose an immediate threat to area residents.
