First full commute in snow tangles Winnipeg traffic

WINNIPEG – Traffic was at a crawl in much of the city Wednesday morning as drivers experienced their first snowy workday commute of the season.

Crashes on routes such as Pembina Highway and McPhillips Street caused major delays during the morning rush hour.

There were reports of extremely slow traffic on major routes, including Fermor Avenue, St. Mary’s Road, Portage Avenue, the Perimeter Highway, Chief Peguis Trail and Archibald Street.

City crews are sanding bridges and will work on regional streets throughout the morning, a city spokeswoman said.

Highways were also slippery, with the Manitoba government road report showing partly snow-covered and snow-covered highways and reduced visibility around Portage la Prairie.

Drivers are advised to head out early in slippery conditions and blowing snow.

Tow truck drivers also asked that people remember they are required by law to slow down and move over when passing roadside assistance vehicles.
