TORONTO – Police in Maplewood, Minnesota released surveillance video Thursday of a violent assault inside a hospital that injured several nurses and ended with the death of the attacker.
The video shows 68-year-old Charles Logan as he chased several nurses through an office area and hallway, beating them with a metal bar. Eight nurses were reportedly injured in the attack which occurred last weekend, including one who suffered a collapsed lung.
Police said when they arrived Logan had fled from St. John’s Hospital and died after officers shocked him with Taser and wrestled him to the ground.
“Immediately after that, he went limp. Officers turned him over and they realized he stopped breathing. They checked for pulse, he did not have one,” Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell told CBS news.
Responding officers attempted to perform CPR on Logan but were unsuccessful. He was taken back to St. John’s hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police said Logan was a peaceful man, according to those who knew him, and had been hospitalized after suffering from confusion.
“This was totally outside of character, so something occurred, and we don’t know what that was,” Schnell told CBS.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has been called in to investigate the incident.
