Threatening message left for family of poisoned dog

MOOSE JAW – A Moose Jaw family is not only mourning the loss of its dog after it was poisoned, but it’s also concerned about a threatening message left on the side of the home.

“(I’m) very, very sad but it’s turned to anger,” said dog owner Trent Lisik. “I don’t know if it was just some sick prank on Halloween or what.”

Last weekend, Lisik found Buster, his five-year-old shih tzu- bichon cross dead in the corner of his outdoor dog run, apparently poisoned to death. The words ‘your next’ (sic) were also spray-painted on the siding of the house.

“It appears as though the message left in regards to the vandalism can certainly be linked to the fact that the dog was poisoned,” said Sgt. Cliff Froehlich with the Moose Jaw Police Service.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Police believe yellow-coloured rat poison was mixed in with bits of hotdog and left in Buster’s outdoor food dish. Chunks of the poison were also scattered throughout the backyard.

“There was quite a bit there. It was overkill. It wasn’t just ‘put a little in the dog kennel’,” said Lisik.

Lisik said he has no idea why someone would do this.

“When he was in his dog run he was good. The neighbours would all (ask), ‘How do you keep him so quiet?’ ” said Lisik.

Until those responsible are caught, Lisik remains on edge. “(I’m) a little bit more cautious and scared and, you know, looking over my shoulder and stuff, that’s for sure.”

Lisik said the neighbour’s cat had to be put down two days ago after also getting sick from apparent poisoning. Moose Jaw Police said it’s heard rumours of other instances of animals being poisoned but no other reports have been made.
