There’s another potential roadblock for the long-delayed Jumbo Glacier Ski Resort near Invermere.
There was a flurry of construction earlier this fall ahead of an October deadline.
Concrete was trucked in and foundations were poured so the operators could keep their environmental assessment certificate.
However, the foundation for the Day Lodge is reportedly right in the middle of an avalanche path.
NDP opposition leader John Horgan says the operators were scrambling to get something in place to satisfy permit requirements.
“It’s no wonder it hasn’t proceeded, when you consider that the first construction at the site, to meet permit requirements they needed to have something in place by October 9,” says Horgan. “So they thought, put in this cleared area. But the reason it’s cleared is because it’s an avalanche zone.”
Environment Minister Mary Polak says the lodge has been moved out of the avalanche zone.
“Although they are near an avalanche zone, they are not in it,” says Environment Minister Mary Polak. “Resorts actively manage for avalanches and even knowing the zones, it doesn’t necessarily protect people. But the lodge has been moved to a location that is outside the avalanche zone.”
