Interactive map: Hospitals are parking ticket hot spots

Hospitals and institutions attract more than their share of Toronto’s parking tickets, city data shows.

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre’s Bayview site was the leading location for tickets written in 2010, with 13,240 tickets, or about 36 a day.

The immediate area around Toronto East General Hospital has four spots where more than 500 tickets were written last year. The area around St. Joseph’s Hospital has nine. There are also ticket hot spots near North York General Hospital, Toronto Western, St. Michael’s and Scarborough Grace. Of the top 50 locations where tickets were written last year, nine are near hospitals.

“It’s a challenge on a campus this size, when you have 10,000 vehicles coming and going every day,” explains Sunnybrook spokesperson Craig Duhamel. “People sometimes have other things on their minds, and get into a situation where they get a parking ticket, but we have to keep the ambulance zones clear.”

Sunnybrook has added valet parking and a 700-car lot to deal with parking issues at the site, he said.

The Distillery District and theatre district attract parking enforcement, as does the Greektown stretch of the Danforth. Ryerson and the downtown University of Toronto campus are peppered with hot spots. There are five around the Old City Hall court complex.

Officials wrote about 2.8 million tickets last year. Data was released to globalnews.ca by the City of Toronto under access-to-information laws.

The downtown core generally attracts the bulk of tickets, followed by clusters at Yonge and Eglinton and Yonge and Sheppard.
