VANCOUVER – B.C.’s premier and Alberta’s premier had their first meeting on Monday.
Alberta premier Jim Prentice is in Vancouver and had a face-to-face meeting with Christy Clark for the first time since becoming premier in September.
Prentice is hoping to build a better relationship with his B.C. counterpart than his predecessor Alison Redford whose relationship with Clark was described as “frosty.”
It is expected the two will focus on growing each province’s economy to support each other. Clark told reporters following the meeting that Prentice is the first Alberta premier to truly understand her province, but did not elaborate further.
In a statement, the premiers said they established a “new working relationship on Monday.
“Increasingly, B.C. and Alberta are the economic engine of Confederation – a role both Premier Prentice and I embrace,” said Clark. “We’re working together to ensure our provinces are able to make even greater economic and cultural contributions to Canada.”
Both premiers said they are focused on maximizing exports into the Asia Pacific and beyond.
“Canada’s western economies are driving growth right across the country. Premier Clark and I are focused on building a relationship aimed at capturing the potential of new markets abroad, creating wealth at home, and building higher quality of life for everyone,” said Prentice.
