A Montreal landmark closed its doors for good Monday as the Dow Planetarium shut it’s doors to make way for a new state of the art planetarium near Olympic Stadium to open in 2013.

The new $46 million state of art structure is supposed to give visitors an out of this world experience. Two massive star theatres with celings transformed into the night sky will be part of the new planetarium. There will also be classrooms, work shops and an exhibit room. The planetarium will take the shape of two telescopes pointing upward.

“I hope they keep some of the feeling,” says Sarah keating, who traveled from Vermont for the planetarium’s last day, “because it’s not so big that you’re overwhelmed and that’s what so nice about it.”

Other critics worry moving the planetarium away from downtown will be bad for business, but the move to another new planetarium will be a great opportunity, according to the Planetarium’s director Pierre Lacombe. He insists the demands on the planetarium have outgrown its downtown location where it’s been since 1966.
