KELOWNA – The Provincial Government is mailing out tens of thousands of cheques to B.C. parents following the lengthy teacher strike that left children out of school for weeks.

Eligible families who registered for the Temporary Education Support Payment can expect the cheques in the next two weeks.

Nearly 230, 000 families have registered for the payment cheques representing 295,000 students.

So far, about 97 percent of families eligible for the program have registered.

The payment program was designed to help parents of students 12 years and under cover costs associated with daycare or other learning methods during the labour dispute.

The $40 a day payment applies to the first 13 days of missed class time from September 2 to September 14 when teachers ratified the collective agreement.

“We recognize that the labour disruption at the beginning of the school year imposed costs on families,” says Minister of Finance Mike de Jong. “Our intention with the temporary education support payment was to provide a modest degree of support for parents who incurred most of those costs.”

For parents who have not yet registered but would still like to, there is still time to do so.

Parents have until January 15, 2015 to register.

No new registrations will be accepted after that time.
