Winnipeg vigil held for babies found dead in storage locker

WINNIPEG — Dozens of people at a vigil Wednesday evening paid tribute to six babies found dead in a Winnipeg storage locker.

Organizer Jennifer Spence said she doesn’t know Andrea Giesbrecht, the woman charged in connection with the discovery, but she was shocked and wanted to do something for the babies.

“In some small way, we had to give this gesture to the children, to their spirits, ’cause they had spirits and they’re travelling on to the spirit world,” she said Wednesday.

The vigil took place at 6 p.m. near the U-Haul storage facility on McPhillips Street near Elgin Avenue where the babies’ bodies were found by staff cleaning out an abandoned storage locker.

Vin Clarke, another organizer, said the turnout in bad weather shows that Winnipeggers care.

“Even in weather like this, there’s still people in our community come out and recognize these kids do need a voice,” he said.

Spence echoed his comments.

“I’m really grateful to the community at large. To see this crowd, it tells me this city has compassion, the community has compassion, love our children,” she said.

Before the vigil she explained her motivation for organizing it.

“In my spiritual walk as a traditional aboriginal person, we try very hard to understand how we do things around loss … and when family members are lost and make their journey to the spirit world, we honour them,” she said Wednesday afternoon.

“We have to send these little ones off to that spirit place in a good, positive and meaningful way.”
