Lawn parking practice criticized

In one northeast Calgary neighbourhood, lawn strips between homes have given way to cement parking pads.

And at least one Saddleridge resident doesn’t like it.

“We need to see more green space,” Greg Steiner told Global News.

“When people overuse their residential neighborhood for the purpose of parking cars, I have an issue with that.”

According to a city bylaw, it’s against the rules.

“I’m not sure how they got permission to cement or pave right to the curb,” said Councillor Jim Stevenson.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“That’s city property, not theirs,” added Stevenson.

Many homeowners contacted by Global News declined to comment.

But one did, citing a lack of parking on his street.

“Some houses [have] joint family living – like five, six people,” said Harry Pannu.

“They have five cars for one house. Where are they going to park?”

“[The] city have small lots – they don’t have enough space,” added Pannu.

Stevenson told Global News he’s committed to solving the issue in the near future.
