VANCOUVER — The song may go, “London Bridge is falling down,” but many fear the same could be said of Vancouver’s Granville Street Bridge.
In the past six months, in two separate incidents, pieces of the bridge have fallen from the sky, hitting cars and narrowly missing people.
Andrew Louie’s car was damaged by the falling bridge in May, when he was parked on Granville Island. Without warning, a chunk of metal fell from the bridge, hitting the window of his vehicle.
“Absolutely it could kill someone, and that’s what I was concerned about,” Louie told Global News. Luckily, no one was inside Louie’s car when it was hit.
“It should never happen, especially when you have millions of people coming on this island.
In September, a piece of the structure fell on the roof of The Sandbar Restaurant.
The City of Vancouver has issued a statement about the issue:
“There is no danger to the public…As a result of the visual inspection, the City identified an opportunity to do preventative maintenance.”
The work is expected to be completed in November. But Louie says he’ll still be watching his step in the area.
