Heavy rain washes out GTA streets, disrupting TTC service

WATCH: Heavy rain and thunderstorms washed out Toronto streets causing headaches for drivers and commuters on the TTC. Angie Seth reports.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms washed out a number of Toronto roads and closed one subway line Thursday night.

Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for Toronto with as much as 50mm of rain hitting the area. It was lifted just after 10 p.m.

The wet weather created headaches for commuters on the road and for those using public transit.

The rain flooded Lawrence subway station, resulting in service being halted between York Mills and Eglington Stations.

Full service resumed Friday morning in time for the morning rush hour.

Several bus routes were also affected by localized flooding.

Twenty-eight shuttle buses were used to carry commuters between the stations during the subway closure.

Meanwhile, southbound Royal York Road at Dundas Sreet West remains closed Friday.

Toronto Hydro reported some small power outages, but said crews were working to restore power to customers in the affected areas.
