Siloam serves Thanksgiving meal to the homeless

WINNIPEG — A busy kitchen and dedicated volunteers are typical sights at Siloam, but volunteers say there is something that makes the Thanksgiving meal special.

“When you think of where you want to be for Thanksgiving, you think of friends and family, and this has become that place for some people,” says Lindsay Smith.

Siloam Mission serves a Thanksgiving meal every year, and the number of volunteers and attendees continues to grow. This year more than 60 people volunteered to help serve, and they are expecting almost 1,400 people to come by for a meal.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

For those who stop by for the hearty meal, it’s a place to feel at home.

“It’s a lot of nice and caring people. I like the volunteers,” Barney said.

The kitchen is staffed with an additional 15 volunteers cooking the meal.

Carole Cockrell is retired and volunteers weekly with Siloam. Cooking the Thanksgiving meal with her husband reminds her of a busy kitchen at home.

“All this activity, this is just like one big kitchen at home. I love it,” Cockrell said.
