MOUNT UNIACKE — A local promotions company is giving Haligonians the chance to take part in a zombie hunt this month, by retrofitting its paintball facility to offer Halloween-themed games.

Jamie Williams, co-owner of Hyper Promotions, said it’s the area’s first paintball zombie hunt.

Williams and his team fabricated a series of online news stories to complement the new Halloween activity. The fictional story explains the military is looking for recruits to help control hoards of rampant zombies.

Participants arrive on site at dusk, are handed a paintball gun and led in small groups through dark woods. Actors in zombie costumes — and plenty of protective equipment — jump out and get shot down.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“There’s lots of haunted walks around,” said artistic director, Peggy Danson. “We really wanted to do something different.”

Organizers hope the zombie hunt attracts people who may have wanted to try paintball, but were worried about being hit.

“The zombies don’t have guns,” said Williams.

As for the actors portraying zombies, there’s a waiting list to get shot at.

“We got a surprising amount of applicants,” said Danson. “I had more people than I could hire. Everybody that is going to be down here is super excited.

Zombie hunts will continue each weekend in October, starting nightly at 7:00 p.m.
