VIDEO: Global plans 24-hour news network with local focus

WATCH: Troy Reeb explains the local-news-first approach of Global News 1

WINNIPEG – Global News will put local news first on a proposed national specialty channel, Shaw Media has announced.

The single national channel would have 28 community feeds from local newsrooms across the country, creating a unique 24-hour local news channel, Troy Reeb, senior vice-president of Global News, told Winnipeg’s Morning News on Tuesday.

“The whole design of this channel would be to put local content first,” Reeb said.

The innovative idea behind Global News 1 would allow national news to fill out a 24-hour local news program, much the way national news is included in local Global News television broadcasts now.

However, having separate feeds for different markets would allow local newsrooms to break into national programming for events of local significance. The national channel would thus be able to broadcast news such as city hall meetings, protests at Portage Avenue and Main Street and events at the Manitoba legislature live to the local audience, Reeb explained.

“This would be a Manitoba news channel. This would be about Winnipeg and Manitoba content first, around the clock.”
