Girl seriously injured after being hit by ETS bus

EDMONTON – A girl was hit by an Edmonton Transit System bus just after 8 a.m. Tuesday in the city’s southwest.

Edmonton police say it happened at Rutherford Road and 16A Avenue at 8:05 a.m.

It was reported that an ETS bus was pulling away from a marked bus stop when an 11-year-old girl tried to get on the bus through the front door. Police say she got caught in the door, and was allegedly dragged for a short distance by the bus as it headed north on Rutherford Road. It was reported that the girl freed herself from the door and her leg was run over by the bus.

The girl was taken to hospital by EMS with what appear to be serious, but non life-threatening injuries.

The EPS Major Collision Investigation Unit has taken over the case.

Tuesday afternoon, Edmonton Transit issued a statement offering its sympathy:

“ETS values the safety and security of our customers above anything else,” said ETS Branch Manager Charles Stolte.

“We are deeply sorry to learn of the injury to this young child, and will ensure this incident is looked into in a thorough and comprehensive manner.”

ETS said it is actively working with police to investigate the incident.

The City of Edmonton also expressed its sympathy to the child and her family. “We realize this is a difficult time and our hearts are with them,” read the statement.
