SASKATOON – Though “Nightmare on Elm Street” aired on the big screen in 1984, Robert Englund still runs into fans of all ages who were terrified by the iconic movie.

“I always had the fan boys, but I’m always defeated by the young lady in all of the films,” said Englund, who played the gruesome Freddie Kreuger.

“So we are also kind of responsible for the first fan girls, which widened the demographic for horror and science fiction and fantasy movies.”

Englund is in town for the Saskatoon Comic and Entertainment Expo this weekend and dropped by the Global Morning News studio to talk about his career, his role as Freddie Kreuger and how acting formed the direction of his life.

“Once I had the Freddie mask it was really liberating. I changed my voice, I changed the way I moved,” said Englund.

“When I got out of the makeup ten years ago I found it had really changed my acting, being free and able to tap into those theatre tricks I had learned so long ago.”

Englund was just in London for a premiere of his latest movie, Last Showing, which also features Finn Jones, Emily Berrington and Keith Allen.

“I play the old projectionist who gets laid off and is forced to work in a concession stand selling popcorn,” said Englund. “He takes an unsuspecting young couple and manipulates them to punish the manager who fired him.”

“It’s going to be terrific.”

The Entertainment Expo runs Sept. 20-21 at Prairieland Park. It features over 200 exhibitors, vendors and artists, and admission will also include access to programming panels and talks with the actors, such as Englund.
