Vancouver firefighters say an early morning blaze at an elementary school is suspicious.

Crews were called around 1:30 to Chief Maquinna Elementary on East 2nd Avenue near Slocan Street.

One classroom was heavily damaged by the flames, but crews managed to keep the fire from spreading to other rooms.

Batt. Chief Archie Roberts with Vancouver Fire and Rescue says there were 19 firefighters and 5 fire trucks involved.

No one was hurt.

Investigators will be back at the scene later this morning, but crews believe the blaze may have been the work of an arsonist.
