12 dead in road accidents in 24 hours after pedestrian dies in Squamish

VANCOUVER – It has been a deadly 24 hours in B.C. with 12 people killed in road accidents around the province.

A 61-year-old woman was killed in Squamish when she was walking across the road at Mamquam and Highway 99.

She was struck by a truck just after 9 p.m. The truck was travelling on a green light and neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors.

The woman was pronounced dead at Squamish General Hospital.

In Fort St. John, five people died in two unrelated crashes on Thursday night.

A young woman in Abbotsford succumbed to her injuries after an accident Friday morning and three people died in a head-on collision near Quesnel Thursday morning.

In Langley, an 83-year-old man died after being struck by a car and a man died after his vehicle rolled over early Friday morning.

Coroner Barb McLintock said the investigations into the deaths are still continuing to determine if distracted driving, weather or impairment were factors in any of the accidents.
