It happened about seven kilometres east of Strathmore, and the collision resulted in the main gas line that runs alongside the highway being ruptured.

Emergency crews and ATCO were called to the scene for repairs, and Highway 817 north was recommended as an alternate route.

Eastbound Highway 1 has since reopened, but the westbound lanes are expected to remain closed for several hours. Traffic is being detoured onto Highway 21 north.
