A Victoria man waited more than three weeks to check his ticket despite knowing someone in the city had won $13 million.
Turns out, his ticket was the winning one.
Duarte Almeida, who is retired, says he almost fainted when he realized his ticket was the winner.
“I knew someone in Victoria had won but I never thought it would be me,” says Almeida. “I have been shaking and sweating since I had learned we had won.”
Almeida had been on the way to breakfast with his wife but decided instead to head straight to the ferry and to BCLC’s office.
He has been playing the same numbers since 1986 and says he makes sure to buy tickets from different retailers.
His winning ticket was purchased in Shawnigan Lake.
A ticket, worth $50 million, still remains unclaimed five months after it was sold in Langley. When the winner finally comes forward, the prize will tie the largest jackpot ever awarded in B.C.
