EDMONTON – A new plan is underway to breath life into a west Edmonton community.

A one-day market held Sunday afternoon is part of the plan to revitalize the area along Stony Plain Road.

The “Back Alley Market” took place on Stony Plain Rd. and 153 St.  The attractions included vendors, food trucks, entertainers, and children’s street hockey and sumo wrestling.

The intent of the market is to showcase what can be done in the area.

“We thought we’d start out at first with just a one day back alley event, just to kind of take a vacant back alley and turn it into something really spectacular,” explained Diane Kereluk, Stony Plain Road business revitalization zone.

Those involved in the initiative want to redirect people back to the community.

They hope to develop the area into a “market district” and change the negative perception surrounding the community.

“I think there’s a lot of people that haven’t been around here for many years that are still carrying a certain…painting it with a certain brush, and what this does is it shows that we are different, we are unique, we’re in a great location,” said Kereluk.

Those spearheading the plan believe giving the area a pedestrian-friendly feel is crucial in it becoming a market district.
