An old gas station in Abbotsford suffered heavy damage in an overnight fire.

Flames were spotted just before 11 o’clock last night at the old Rise-N-Shine gas station at McCallum and King.

Crews began pouring water on the fire right away, bringing it under control quickly.

The structure has both smoke and water damage, but was scheduled for demolition anyway.

The property is being redeveloped into housing.

Ass. Chief Craig Bird with Abbotsford Fire Rescue says the fire travelled through the ceiling area and flames were showing from the outside of the building.

“Crews arrived on scene and did an aggressive exterior attack and got the bulk of the fire knocked down,” says Bird.

“This building has been uninhabited for quite a period of time, so we’re very reluctant to send crews inside until we got the bulk of the fire knocked out.”

The cause is still under investigation.
