Fraudsters target Airdrie storm victims: what to watch out for

CALGARY- In the wake of a series of severe storms that pummeled the city of Airdrie, RCMP are warning people to watch out for construction fraud.

Officers have received reports about people going door-to-door offering to repair hail damage at a discounted price, adding they don’t operate with insurance companies so their premiums won’t go up.

The fraudster then takes photos of the damage, gets a cash deposit and says they’ll come back to fix it the following day. However, they do not return and get away with the victim’s money.

People are reminded to request credentials and research companies prior to giving a deposit, and are asked to report any suspicious activity to police.
