Series of house fires in Calgary sparks concerns

CALGARY- With half a dozen Calgary homes being destroyed by fire in just over a week, there is concern about what has been sparking them all.

Investigators are still trying to determine the causes of numerous fires, including ones in New Brighton, Mountain Park and Whitehorn. However, one that gutted a mobile home near Blackfoot Trail was caused by cooking left unattended.

Officials say there have actually been 18 per cent fewer fires since June, compared to the same time period last year.

“The damage could be more and they were larger homes and displaced people, but what Calgarians need to know is we go to multiple fires every single day,” says Carol Henke from the Calgary Fire Department. “The good news is they’re not all of the scale that we’ve seen recently.”

It could take months to determine what caused the other fires, as samples are often sent away for lab testing or expert analysis.
