WINNIPEG – The man found dead in a North End home following a standoff with Winnipeg police was Andrew Baryluk, 52, police say.
Police went to Baryluk’s home on Stella Avenue at about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a call about a distraught man.

Police knew before they arrived that he might have a gun and that he’d threatened to harm himself, they said.
Several police units responded and secured the area, including evacuating some nearby homes.
Police contacted Baryluk and spoke with him, but negotiations broke down and shortly after 8:20 p.m., shots were fired from within the residence, police said in a news release. Police returned fire, they said.
The tactical support team entered the home at about 3 a.m. and found Baryluk’s body inside, police said.
No officers were injured in the standoff.
Power was turned off in the area for a while on Wednesday but restored at about 10:30 p.m. Residents said they received little information from police, including when those who had to leave their homes would be allowed to return.
The homicide unit is investigating.
