TORONTO – A 15-year-old girl died after she was trapped under a soccer net in Bradford Wednesday afternoon.
South Simcoe Police say they are investigating the “accidental death.” The girl hasn’t been identified.
The girl was playing soccer with a friend at the Portuguese Cultural Centre when the net tipped over and trapped her under the crossbar.
“The friend was able to contact 911. Emergency services were on the scene and treated the girl,” said South Simcoe Police Sgt. Sean Willan.
She was taken to hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Eric Knibbe lives right across the street from where it all happened and witnessed the emergency response.
“When I came out I saw them administering CPR and giving oxygen,” said Knibbe. “Then a helicopter arrived, but did not leave for a while.”
This is not the first fatal soccer net related incident in Canada. In Montreal in 2001, a boy was killed after a goal post collapsed on him and two years ago in B.C., 5-year-old Jaedyn Amann-Hicks died after a net and goal post fell on her.
The incident is still under full investigation as police try to determine why and how the cross-bar ended on top of the girl.
