SASKATOON – If you find yourself swatting pesky mosquitoes less often lately, it’s due to a dramatic drop in their numbers.
The City of Saskatoon said the number caught in traps declined in the last week, dropping from an average of 117 every night to just 27.
That’s on par for the three-year average for this time of year.
A small number of Culex tarsalis, the mosquito that carries the West Nile virus, have been caught in city traps.
While the risk is low, health officials advise taking precautions such as covering up and removing standing water from yards.
