Beekeepers in the province are receiving federal funding in an effort to keep Saskatchewan buzzing.

The Government of Canada announced Wednesday they are investing up to 370-thousand dollars to the Saskatchewan Beekeepers’ Association.

This is to help the industry develop new strategies to help deal with a decline in the honey bee colony population.

“This project will help farmers and the entire industry increase profitability and find ways to improve pollination of fruits and vegetables to help promote a balanced ecosystem,” said Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar MP Kelly Block in making the announcement.

The bee population has declined in the last four years due to disease, pest resistance to treatment methods and increased demand on honey bee colonies to provide pollination services.

“Bee colony mortality is a serious issue that affects all segments of the agriculture and agri-food sector,” said Allen Kuhlmann, Chair of the Agriculture Council of Saskatchewan. He went on to say the decline in the bee population could have serious consequences on food supply.
