Man trapped under dirt, killed at Toronto construction site

TORONTO – A man was buried alive under a mound of construction dirt and died before crews could extricate him Thursday afternoon.

Toronto Fire officials say the construction crew was in the process of building a new home and had dug trenches on the property near Eglinton Avenue and Caledonia Road.

The man fell into one of the large trenches and was buried after nearby piles of dirt collapsed on top of him.

Crews worked to rescue the man from underneath the mounds of dirt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
