HALIFAX —
The body of a canoeist, who had been missing for nearly two days, has been recovered in Antigonish County, NS.
The 33-year-old man was reported missing around 5:30 Sunday evening, after his canoe over turned at the Old Breakwater, near Bayfield.
One of the two people in the canoe was able to make it to shore safely.
RCMP members, a police dive team, Department of Natural Resources helicopter, firefighters and local residents have been searching the waters since Sunday night looking for the man.
His body was recovered by a local fishermen who had been aiding in the search around 9:30 Tuesday morning.
The victim’s name is not being released at this time.
RCMP say he was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident.
“Our investigation has determined that no life jackets were on board. Again, a very sad ending for the family. We recommend of course that people have life jackets on board, you don’t have to wear them but certainly have them on board. Maybe if the men have had the life jackets we might have had a different ending” Sgt Al LeBlanc told Global News.
