Hot weather means record-breaking energy consumption in Alberta

CALGARY- A heat wave throughout the province has broken records when it comes to energy consumption—and Calgarians are enjoying every minute of it.

“It feels fantastic,” said Rina Di Maria, who was out enjoying the sun on Wednesday. “It’s a nice change from the cold long winter we had, so this has been good.”

“It’s really hot, ridiculous burning hot, too hot,” laughed Holly Christensen. “We are not used to this in Calgary.”

Temperatures hovered around 30 degrees Celsius, meaning a lot of air conditioners were on full blast.

“We are actually expecting to see the peak reached and surpassed once again,” says Angela Anderson from the Alberta Electric System Operator. “Supply looks really good, and we don’t  foresee any issues happening with the grid and the reliability.”

While electricity may be expensive, at least no blackouts are expected.
