WEST KELOWNA –A fire in the Smith Creek area of West Kelowna is now in the mop up stage.
The fire started in a gully near the end of Dixie Road around 12:30 Monday morning.
The fire grew to a half-hectare before it was brought under control.
West Kelowna fire chief Wayne Schnitzler says there are a few houses in the area.
As a precaution, police went door to door to advise residents about the potential threat and to warn them they may have to evacuate their homes.
Fortunately the fire was brought under control and no evacuations were necessary.
West Kelowna Fire Rescue responded with 21 firefighters.
Peachland Fire Rescue and a BC Forest Service attack crew also assisted with the firefighting efforts.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The area will be patrolled and monitored by fire personnel over the coming days.
No word yet on the cause.
