CALGARY- A steer was euthanized Saturday afternoon after suffering a severe neck injury during the steer wrestling event at the Calgary Stampede.

Steer wrestler Casey Martin says it was a normal run and he isn’t sure exactly what went wrong.

“You never want to see something like this,” said Martin. “I run horned cattle on my ranch and I throw them down often to do medical and field doctoring. When I realized this steer was injured I held him still to prevent any further injury.”

Veterinarians examined the animal and determined the injuries were too severe and quickly made the decision to euthanize the steer.

The Calgary Stampede says it will undertake a thorough review to determine if there were any contributing factors to the incident that could have been prevented.
