Doug Ford bombarded with chorus of meows

TORONTO – Things got a little strange at Toronto city council Thursday.  Doug Ford faced a chorus of meows, from some fellow councillors.

He was being heckled after voicing his support to allow the construction of billboards across the city.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Ford responded with this.

“The old cat calls are coming out again,” he said. “From the old cats.”

Those comments prompted one councillor to yell “don’t say that” while dozens of others began meowing in unison.

Speaker Frances Nunziata eventually begged councillors to “stop it” though a few rebellious councillors could be heard sneaking in a few more cat calls.

The scene was slightly more light-hearted than Wednesday’s morning outburst when Ford accused other councillors of hypocrisy while they debated an integrity commissioner’s report on the mayor’s robocalls.
