Arson blamed for public bus fire in China injuring 32

Police suspect an arsonist started a fire that injured 32 people inside a bus in Hangzhou, China.

BEIJING – Police are blaming a man for setting a fire that destroyed a public bus in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou and injured 32 people over the weekend.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Monday that police had security video that showed the man, who appeared to be about 30, boarding the bus, pouring liquid from his backpack and setting the vehicle on fire.

The blaze, which started at about 5 p.m. Saturday, quickly spread through the bus. Xinhua cited police who said it was caused by banana oil that the suspect carried in a 10-litre bottle.

Xinhua said the suspect was one of 15 people who were being treated for severe injuries from the fire. Others were being treated for less serious injuries.
