EDMONTON – A fire broke out in a woodpile at the Foothills Forest Products sawmill in Grande Cache Thursday night.

A sprinkler was set up around the fire to protect the mill, which is a major employer in the area according to Kevin Zahara , a spokesperson with Environment and Sustainable Resource Development.

Local fire crews, along with ESRD ground and air crews, fought the blaze through the night before it was brought under control Friday morning.

Grande Cache fire chief Brian Lott said no buildings were involved. Air tankers were bought in fight to fire from above, while people on the ground moved wood away from the burning pile. Lott said that helped to stop the flames from spreading.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Grande Cache is about 430 kilometres west of Edmonton, in the Alberta foothills.
