REGINA – Regina has received so much rain over the last week the city has been forced to release partially-treated and untreated wastewater into Wascana Creek.

The rainfall has filled the lagoons at the sewage treatment plant to capacity.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Wastewater had been temporally bypassed at the McCarthy Boulevard pump station and screened to remove non-organic solids before the wastewater was released into Wascana Creek.

The city ended the bypass at the McCarthy Boulevard pump station today and water quality in Wascana Creek is expected to improve.

The city will continue releasing partially-treated wastewater at the sewage treatment plant for at least one week. Downstream users are advised not to use Wascana Creek for recreational purposes.

The city is reminding everyone that the city’s drinking water is completely safe.
