TORONTO – Prime Minister Stephen Harper is scheduled to introduce today the new Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, replacing David C. Onley after a seven-year tenure.
The announcement will be made in Ottawa with a ceremony to begin at 12:30 p.m. ET.
Onley became Ontario’s 28th lieutenant governor on Sept. 5, 2007 after spending nearly two decades working in the media as a broadcaster.
The 64-year-old was born in Midland, Ontario and raised in Scarborough where he currently resides.
During his years of service as the province’s viceroy, Onley championed issues affecting the disabled.
At the age of three, he battled polio which resulted in his partial paralysis.
Onley is the longest serving Lieutenant Governor of Ontario since Albert Edward Matthews from 1937-1946 and the province’s third longest serving viceroy since Confederation.
