VANCOUVER, B.C. – A wildfire off Seawood Terrace, on Cormorant Point in Saanich is under control, according to the authorities.

It broke out late this afternoon on the beach and fire crews had to climb down a cliff that was more than 300 metres steep, to reach the blaze. Flames were burning on just over 4000 metres or one acre of the terrain.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

It’s not clear how the fire started, but fire fighters say it serves as a warning to beach-goers now that the summer is here.

“Right now there is a ban on all fires in Saanich and beach fires are strictly prohibited…the conditions are very dry right now and it’s very dangerous for anyone to be down in those areas with any sort of ignition source,” said Capt. Russ Abbott, with the Saanich Fire Department.
