‘Persieing’ is the new planking: World Cup goal sparks social media craze

TORONTO – They call him the flying Dutchman.

Netherlands striker Robin van Persie’s airborne headed equalizer against Spain during Friday’s World Cup match has gone viral.

Van Persie flung himself at a long pass and headed the ball over Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas, arms stretched out at either side. The impressive goal leveled the score 1-1, and the Netherlands went on to win 5-1 in one of the shocks of the tournament so far.

The maneuver has sparked an online craze dubbed “Persieing” – a fancier version of planking.

Fans from all sides of the pitch have taken to social media to pay homage to the flying Dutchman.
