CALGARY- A man has died in Kananaskis Country, after falling off the side of a mountain west of Calgary.

On Saturday, a conservation officer noticed an abandoned vehicle in the Opal Ridge area, which still hadn’t moved by the time he went by again on Sunday.

Around the same time, someone reported finding a backpack on the ridge, sparking an aerial search and rescue.

On Monday, emergency responders spotted his body, and managed to retrieve it the next day. It’s believed the victim was scrambling up the mountain alone when he fell, and his death has been deemed accidental.

The victim has been identified by co-workers as David Ratzlaff, who was an instructor with the Quickdraw Animation Society. He is being remembered as a “wonderful artist, teacher, advocate and friend, and will be missed by many.”
